Back problems

We deal with such a range of back issues at The StoneHouse Clinic, and it is a little difficult to summarise everything we can do for backs but in essence, most back pain falls under two categories:

1.  An aching chronic pain; or
2.  A sharp acute spasm/pain

What causes back pain?

Looking at the two categories above, the first one (aching pain) is usually caused by congestion of muscle tissue (or what used to be known as Lumbago).  The muscle becomes irritated as it gets filled with by-products of over contraction.  The symptoms of this are aching and/or stiffness, and is generally caused by excessive bad postural position.

The second, sharper pain is usually caused by spasms occuring in the muscle tissue possibly due to a  tear of the muscle or ligament.  This type of back pain is usually caused by some kind of trauma e.g. lifting something heavy at an awkward angle.

We also see many people with diagnosed conditions, and we are able to manage and provide pain relief, and suggest ways you can manage your problem at home for a number of issues including:

- Sciatica
- Bulging (herniated) discs
- Prolapsed discs
- Arthritis of the spine
- Spondylolisthesis
- Spondylosis

What can I do if I have a back ache?

If you are suffering from a dull aching back ache, it is usually best to put some sort of heat on the area.  This can be done by using wheat bags, a hot water bottle, heat patches or heat lotion.

If you have sharp spasms, it is best to use a cooling effect.  Ice is not a good idea as it can make it spasm further.  Cold packs can be used but build up to them gently especially if you are older.  You can use gel coolers, a gel wine cooler, or frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel on the area to see if this helps.

What can The StoneHouse Clinic do for my back pain?

For all types of back pain, whatever their cause we can manage the problem, provide pain relief and give you advice on anything you can do at home to help your problem.  If necessary we can refer you on to the best specialists in the area to get a diagnosis if we suspect an underlying cause that needs confirming, or if your problem is not responding as quickly as we would expect.

Your back problem will be as individual as you are, and so we tailor treatment accordingly using a variety of methods including:

- Massage
- Medical acupuncture
- Mobilisation techniques
- Manipulation of the spine
- Electrotherapy 
- Stretching techniques
- Measured mechanical assessment
- Traction
- Rest positions to retrain the muscles
- Ice massage 

We will also review with you any lifestyle or postural issues that may be contributing to your back pain, and our aim will always be to stop the problem from reoccurring.
