How We Treat

Wrist Tendinopathy

What is wrist tendinopathy?

Wrist tendinopathy is a condition in which there are tiny tears within the collagen fibres of the tendons around the wrist.  These tears can lead to swelling of the tendon and result in pain.

What are the symptoms of wrist tendinopathy?

You may feel any combination of the following symptoms:

  • Pain over the wrist itself but it can spread into the hand or up into the elbow
  • Weakness of the wrist and forearm

Why does it happen / what causes wrist tendinopathy?

Tendinopathy can commonly come on with an increase in activity using the muscles and tendons of the wrist.  A lack of mobility and strength in the area will mean that the tendon works harder and can become overloaded more easily, causing the small tears to occur.

Self-help measures

Simple things you can try at home if you think you have wrist tendinopathy are:

  • rest the area from obvious repetitive movements if possible i.e. try and rest from sport for a couple of days, and avoid keyboard work
  • use ice and/or heat to ease the inflammation and to help the healing process
  • Ibuprofen has been shown to be useful for tendinopathy in the early phases, but should only be taken in the short term
  • Self-massage any tender points in the surrounding muscles

What can The StoneHouse Clinic do?

Our professional staff will firstly assess the tedinopathy to ascertain the true nature of your injury.  If left untreated, the tendons can go into disrepair and you may start to notice that small innoccuous activities become painful.  Depending on the tendon involved, wrist tendinopathy can be worsened with gripping, pushing, pulling or even just using a mouse at work.

From the initial assessment, we will agree a treatment program with you taking into account your goals and lifestyle.  There are no recipes for treating tendinopathy as the treatment will be individual to you, but may include:

  • Bespoke massage techniques
  • Mobilisations
  • Electrotherapy
  • Acupncture
  • Shockwave treatment
  • Steroid injection
  • Supports and strapping
  • K-taping
  • Advice and instruction on graded return to exercise, if appropriate for you
  • Advice and instruction on preventing a re-occurrence

If you think you may have wrist tendinopathy and would like to book an appointment with one of our friendly and experienced Physiotherapists or Osteopath at The StoneHouse Clinic in Corsham, Wiltshire (near Chippenham and Bath) then please contact us.
